GHENT & BRUGES

Updated: Nov 30, 2020

River Lys

Belgium was our first trip as a family since we moved to Barcelona.  We started our trip with Ghent, which was absolutely beautiful!   We stayed at the Ghent Marriott hotel, centrally located, with scenic views of the Korenlei and River Lys.  We were in walking distance to all the premier downtown attractions like the Saint Bavo's Cathedral and Gravensteen Castle.

There were so many great restaurants, which included anywhere from traditional Belgium all the way to Indian food.  Basically there is something for everyone, and if you are a BEER and waffle person, then this is the place for you!

We were there a total of 4 days and spent most of our time in Ghent, but took a ride to Bruges (which is known as the amusement park of Belgium).  The kids in particular loved Bruges due to all the rides they went on!  Many amusement park ride later, we were able to squeeze in the Markt (Market -the main square) and The Basilica of the Holy Blood.  I highly recommend if you have kids from toddlers up. (picture below says it ALL)!

Besides being kid friendly, it's also great for singles, or couples.  It's actually quite romantic,  especially sitting along the canal having a bite to eat, or just sipping on one of Belgium's famous beers.

Before you leave, don't forget to sample Belgium's fabulous chocolates.

Below are 3 restaurants that we tried and LOVED!

1. Restaurant De Koetse (known for their seafood , especially their mussels)

2. IL Cortile (Italian-great homemade pizza's, but their homemade pastas -especially the pesto is absolutely phenomenal)

3. Himalaya (Nepali/Indian Restaurant) Great authentic dishes.
