Israel is a place that has fascinated me for many years, and yearned to visit. It's regarded by the Christians, Muslims and Jews as the holy land. It's most sacred sites are in Jerusalem. Within it's old city, the Temple Mount complex includes the dome of the rock shrine (where the prophet Muhammad, is traditionally believed to have ascended into heaven from this site). the historic Western Wall, Al-Aqsa mosque and the church of the Holy Sepulchre.
As these are holy sites, they all have strict rules, hours of operation, as well as attire. Ladies have to be covered head to toe to enter the mosques (and only certain days and times permit non-muslims). The churches and temples also require conservative attire.
The area is also heavily guarded with metal detectors. I myself did the Muslim pilgrimage, which was both rewarding and peaceful. I felt connected to my family and loved ones that have passed on.
Our second day consisted of going to the old city to see the birthplace of Jesus Christ, walk in his footsteps and visit the milestones of his life. Dozens of pilgrimage sites are spread throughout Israel, half of them are located in the vicinity of Jerusalem, and another third in the Galilee (mainly in Nazareth and around the Sea of Galilee).
The interior of the church of Holy Sepulchre was absolutely beautiful, as well as it's rich history. We entered the room of the last supper on Mount Zion, just outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem (traditionally known as The Upper Room).
We ended the day bathing in the dead sea, and purchasing a TON of dead sea product!
We used Arie Rosenzweig for the tour: ariero@netvision.net.il
Israel's financial hub, Tel Aviv, is known for its Bauhaus architecture and beaches. Located on the mediterranean coast, this city is filled with amazing restaurants, art gallery's, night life, and museums. I highly recommend the following for dining out:
Topolopompo - this is an asian infused, creative menu that serves top notch food. The interior is also quite beautiful. It is a bit pricey, so skip this one if you are on a budget.
Claro - this is a farm to table restaurant that has a great atmosphere , music, and food. The building it self has a lot of history, and it's worth the trip!
My favorite art gallery was the Eden fine art they have some really cool art from all around the world. This showroom was just one of 11 world wide.
Museums include Beit Hatfutsot, which exhibit the history of Jewish communities worldwide, and the The Eretz Israel Museum which covers the country’s archaeology, folklore crafts, and features an on-site excavation of 12th-century-B.C. ruins.
This trip was filled with history, faith, and culture. I feel that everyone should at least come here once in there lifetime.
Salaam...Shalom...Peace!
