We finally made it to Cape Verde! Our first and only island visit was to São Vicente. Our good friends and owners of the beautiful Casa da Djedja welcomed us with open arms. This beautiful boutique hotel is a 10 minute walk from the beach and centre of town. Daily homemade breakfast, with a beautiful outdoor area, and a staff that is very helpful putting together an itinerary for a fun filled stay!
São Vicente is one of CV's islands known for it's mountainous landscape, so great for hiking more than the beaches (although, there is still some nice ones). This island is also known for the Tropical Carnival which is a celebration of the history of the island and can go on for several days and even weeks at a time.
Monte Verde has amazing panoramic views of Mindelo and Monte Cara. From there you can then see the uninhabited islands when you climb to the top of the mountain. Other great activities to do on this island are fishing, surfing, and relaxing within the town.
São Vicente is an island of Cape Verde, off West Africa. This island is known for being a cultural hub, with traditional music, art, handmade items, and colonial architecture like the 1900s Palácio do Povo. There is also Parque Natural Monte Verde, which has trails up the volcanic peak. Beaches include Mindelo’s Laginha Beach, the shallow lagoon of Baía das Gatas and São Pedro, with strong wind and and great surfing to be had. Our days were spent mostly on the beach, and eating traditional CV food like Cachupa, Cus-Cus, Jagacida, and lot's and lot's of seafood and fresh fruits! The kids loved swimming with the turtles, paddle boarding, and jumping off bridges at Baía das gatas.
São Vicente is very affordable, and high season tends to be more during the fall/winter, since temperatures usually don't fluctuate much. The island is very affordable and kid friendly. Cape Verde is a cluster of ten islands, and so far we are loving it. We will be back to discover the other nine! (Sal, Boa Vista, Fogo, Santiago, Santo Antao, Sao Nicolau, Brava, Santa Luzia, and Maio).
